Guide to Kia in South Africa

Kia Motors has a rich history that has seen rapid growth in recent years, similar to its international partner, Hyundai.

In South Africa, Kia offers 11 models, many designed to suit the affordable car market. They also have an extensive dealership network across our country and Namibia.

The brand has also become widely known in recent years due to its sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup and other tournaments.

A Brief History of Kia

Founded in 1944, the Kia Motor Corporation is South Korea’s oldest vehicle manufacturer. Although the company was formed in 1944, it only started producing Kia Motors in 1947. Prior to this, Kia built parts and assembled vehicles for other motor companies.

During the Asian financial crisis in 1997, Kia declared bankruptcy. This led to the forming of a partnership between Kia and Hyundai in 1998, which saw both companies exchange part-ownership.

Kia vehicles are sold internationally, with a large presence in Europe, North America, Mexico, and India. South Africa is also a successful venture for them, as the company has realised record sales since its arrival on local shores.

The Kia Picanto and Rio models are excellent for everyday use, while the larger Sportage and Sorento SUVs have great off-road abilities if you enjoy outdoor adventure.

Although the entire Kia range is popular in South Africa, you’ll often find the Picanto and Rio models at car rental companies. Their popularity as a car hire option is probably due to their good fuel consumption, comfort, and specs.
